Complete Irons Fitting
The Complete Irons Fitting is the other half. We perform all of the same measurements and testing to figure out your best fit in irons. The first step is to nail down club length and lie angle.
Launch monitor testing then focuses on center contact, swing path, face angle at impact and angle of attack.
Center contact tells us if you're a pure ball striker. The more consistent your center contact, the smaller iron head size you will be able to use successfully. The best shots come from the smallest iron heads with the most concentrated center of gravity. If you're very, very good, we might break out the Miura "Baby Blades".
Swing path and face angle at impact tell us the degree of offset required in your irons. A player with a consistent inside-out swing path will always do better with irons that have very little offset. Low offset is especially important for very good players who rely on partial and knock down shots. Offset is your enemy when you get your hands ahead of the club head. Offset makes aiming knockdowns very difficult.
Conversely, a player with an outside-in swing path needs offset to help square the club at impact. The more extreme the outside in swing path, the greater the offset required.
"Angle of attack" describes the way a player approaches the ball. Some players come in "steep" – hitting down on the ball. A little bit fat and a big divot gets excavated. A steep angle of attack will find that a wider sole with more bounce will help him make solid contact.
Conversely, a player with a shallow angle of attack can play an iron head with a sharper front edge and narrow sole.
The turf conditions on a player's golf course also suggest the appropriate sole grind. Softer conditions suggest wider soles with more bounce. Firm conditions suggest a narrower sole and sharper leading edge.
Once we understand a player's swing and the course conditions where he plays, we can make a good recommendation about size and shape of an iron head.
If a player is strong, we may experiment with different swing weights to find the club balance that gives the best performance.
After we've worked through the performance questions indoors, we will give you a handful of test clubs, each one matching your "fitting specification" but with different shaft shafts so that you can verify our findings outdoors – by feeling contact and seeing the ball fly. The ultimate goal is to find the best shaft and head combination.
The Complete Irons Fitting requires an hour and a half indoors and at least the same time testing the fitting clubs outdoors.
The Complete Irons fitting is $150.
